Former assistant to the Governor of New York, Sun Wen, has been accused of being a communist spy involved in Money Laundering and bribery, obstructing meetings between Taiwanese officials and US officials!
Taiwanese officials in New York often struggle to make contact with American officials, as a hidden hand is intervening behind the scenes? Former federal government official Linda Sun, who served as an assistant and senior aide to New York governors Andrew Cuomo and Kathy Hochul, held a high position but was indicted by the Justice Department last year on charges of being a Chinese spy, using her position to secretly request documents from colleagues and send them to the Chinese consulate in New York. After an investigation by the FBI, it was revealed that she took advantage of her official capacity to send U.S. government documents to the Chinese consulate in exchange for millions of dollars in compensation, allowing her and her husband Chris Hu to make a fortune, purchasing luxury real estate in Long Island and San Francisco, and opening a wine shop.
According to the prosecutor's indictment, Sun Wen and her husband Hu Xiao made hundreds of millions of dollars through leaking confidential information. The entire case has garnered significant attention from the U.S. Department of Justice, not only because Sun Wen, as a federal official, is involved in corruption and money laundering but also because she is suspected of acting as an agent for the Chinese Communist Party by transmitting U.S. government documents to the Chinese consulate. Under Trump's stringent policies against Chinese infiltration in the U.S., this case has attracted even more attention. Sun Wen appeared in court on April 24 in the Eastern District of New York, and the case will continue to be heard on July 28.
Relying on the identity of American officials to earn money by deceiving China.
According to past reports from the BBC, US law requires individuals acting on behalf of foreign entities or parties, or having business dealings with them, to register as foreign agents. Sun Wen, who was born in China and naturalized as a US citizen, concealed that she acted under the orders and directives of the Chinese government. In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic spread in New York State, prosecutors claimed that Sun Wen acted quite unscrupulously, secretly adding Chinese officials to non-public official conference calls regarding public health measures in the state government. After successfully helping New York politicians avoid events hosted by Taiwan, she even boasted in a message to Chinese consular officials in 2016: "Everything has been resolved perfectly." In 2019, when then-President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-wen visited New York, Sun Wen was photographed participating in protests against Tsai Ing-wen's visit to the US.
Two former New York governors' aides obtained documents and delivered them to the Chinese consulate.
Sun Wen (Linda Sun) was formerly an assistant to former New York Governor Cuomo and later continued to serve the current Governor Hochul. She was promoted by Hochul to work as an official at the Department of Labor. Last year, New York prosecutors accused Sun Wen of facilitating access for the Chinese consulate, including forging signatures to issue invitations to Chinese officials, allowing Chinese officials to join a teleconference with the New York state government without permission, and abusing her position to prevent Taiwanese representatives in New York from contacting the state government. During the investigation, prosecutors also found that Sun Wen was involved in money laundering, bank fraud, and illegal importation of foreigners, and they escalated the charges against her and her husband Hu Xiao for money laundering.
Climbing up with the help of the Taiwanese-American state representative.
It is worth noting that Sun Wen's stepping stone into politics was the Taiwanese-American Democratic state legislator Grace Meng, with whom Sun Wen previously served as chief of staff. According to past reports by the Wall Street Journal, sources with knowledge of the matter revealed that Sun Wen connected with the Chinese consulate while working with Grace Meng. Grace Meng, from a political family, has a father, Meng Guangrui, who also served as a Democratic state assemblyman in New York. In response, Grace Meng expressed her deep disappointment.
Sun Wen and her husband Hu Xiao were released on bail of $1.5 million and $500,000 respectively. The judge announced that a hearing will be held before the formal trial on July 28.
